As a London PR photographer I work with various Brand agencies to capture their campaigns. I was briefed by Given London to photograph the Heathrow Express campaign that celebrates 20 years of sustainable travel.
Given London are a brand agency who specialise in sustainability. To celebrate 20 years of the Heathrow Express service while highlighting its sustainability credentials they created the Heathrow Express poster campaign that looks to raise awareness of recycling, by featuring vibrant sculptures made from rubbish found on London trains.
Illustrator and paper sculptor Rebecca Sutherland “upcycled” old newspapers, drink cans, discarded cups and bottle tops found left behind on trains, into intricate sculptures. The designs were then photographed and used for the posters.
Sutherland, who has previously created artwork for clients including the Royal Mail and Virgin Atlantic, says: “My thinking was to create things that… [were both] seen as refuse and a visually stunning image – [I wanted] just enough change so we can still see what it is [made from].”
The posters stretch 36-metres in the arrivals walkway at Heathrow Airport, Terminal Two, and greet people as they land in London. The installation will be up for two years and is intended to bring some enjoyment and information to the audience in this high footfall environment.
The various posters, featuring different paper sculptures and vignettes, depict “sustainability achievements” by Heathrow Express, such as cutting their landfill waste down to zero, increasing the number of women train drivers, using electric trains, and the company’s work with education charity Harris Academy in helping 1,000 young people prepare for working life.
Heathrow Express head of commercial Chris Crauford said: “This campaign has proved to be a striking and impactful way of celebrating 20 years of sustainable travel with Heathrow Express.”
